Mommy Blogger Profile: The Eco Chic

Calley and Her Family On A Recent Vacation.

Thoughts from me (Kelly): I am so happy to profile Calley of The Eco Chic. I met Calley in NYC a few months ago at Blog Her’10. She is an amazing woman and I have really enjoyed working with her on many social media and marketing projects. We continue to build a great business relationship and most importantly I am so glad that she is one of my friends.

Who am I?  Well every time I go to write a brief bio on myself I find it is always changing and I guess that’s not a bad thing.  My name is Calley and I am the owner of The Eco Chic blog and Eco Chic Parties…but that’s not all!
I’m a wife to a sports geek – we’ve been married for 10 years this March.  We now have two wonderfully adorable kids; a brainy little boy who is almost 8 and our little princess who is almost 2.  We also have a mean ole’ kitty and a pudgy little puppy.  We both grew up in Georgia where we lived until 5 years ago when we settled into our dream of living near the ocean and are now a Florida family.
We both work full-time and our kids go to school or day care every day.  I work as an Environmental Consultant out of my home so I’m lucky enough to have a flexible schedule to volunteer at my kids school on occasion (did I mention I’m also the PTA Vice President at my sons school?).  I do have to travel a few times a year for work but I actually enjoy traveling and get to visit some really amazing places here in the US.  We’re also very active in our church and community and during the spring we can be found at the little league park every weekend.
About three years ago I decided to take my passion for the environment and began writing at The Eco Chic blog.  In the beginning days (before my second baby and before cloth diapers) I wrote about simple things everyone could do to live a greener lifestyle.  I love to read articles and blogs about the environment and research new technologies and trends.  The green movement continues to expand so I will always have something to write about.
When I got pregnant with my daughter a few years ago I decided I would research cloth diapers.  I was surprised by how far they’ve come since I first researched them almost 8 years ago with my son.  We didn’t have much to choose from back then so we used disposable diapers.  Looking back now I wish I had known about modern cloth diapers because they have changed our lives.
Then 2 years ago someone encouraged me to join Twitter.  I had been putting it off for a long time and have to admit I was a little intimidated and annoyed by all the #hashtag nonsense.  Fortunately for me I stuck with Twitter and made some amazing friends.  It all started with Monday night #clothdiapers chats that bumGenius hosted – I found other moms just like me who were trying cloth diapers for the first time.  Our kids were all about the same age and many of the other moms also blogged.  It was like a virtual mommy’s group and I was hooked.
Now I own and operate 2 blogs and host weekly (almost) Twitter Parties with hundreds of attendees.  What started out as a party to raise awareness about cloth diapers has turned into a small side business for me.  In 2011 I’m expanding my services to provide Blog Parties, live Twitter Parties, Facebook events, and more.  I’ve really enjoyed consulting privately with cloth diaper companies to help educate them on how to use social media (Twitter, Facebook, and blogs) to help raise brand awareness and advocate for cloth diapers.  My friends think I’ve become quite the eco, cloth diapering, social media geek!  There aren’t many conversations that don’t include “today on Twitter…” or “I got this new cloth diaper to try today.”
My daughter is quickly approaching two and the potty training years – whatever will I talk about when she’s out of cloth diapers?  This is actually an on-going joke in my family that she will be in diapers until she’s four!  Of course since using cloth diapers actually speeds up the potty learning skills our cloth diapering days are actually numbered.
What’s next for The Eco Chic?  Even after our cloth diapering and breastfeeding days are up (oh yeah, we’re weaning at 2 also) I’m sure I’ll still be a strong advocate for both.  I am looking forward to talking about eco-friendly toys and healthy living.  Most recently I have begun to sew and I would like to focus some time on up-cycling and crafting with items that most people would trash.  One thing I know is sure – you can always find me on Facebook, Twitter, and my blogs sharing my life and passion.
