Excellent blog post – we at Little D’s agree that a mom can be green, loving and stylish without being crunchy. I breast feed because it’s healthier, and cheaper! For the same reasons I use cloth diapers. I also can’t stand the thought of leaving my daughter a legacy of landfill and toxic waste. Using a carrier does not have to be crunchy – it can be stylish and is very compatible with a hip and urban lifestyle. I carry my baby because ti is practical and it makes everyone happier.

I had not even heard the term “crunchy” until we started using cloth diapers about 7 months ago. I guess I’m just a bit crunchy. I breastfeed b/c it’s better for my baby’s health, but also b/c I’m too lazy to get up in the middle of the night to fix a formula bottle. That’s also why we co-sleep. I wear my baby b/c it’s much easier than pushing a stroller. I cloth diaper b/c it’s better for baby, for the environment, but also b/c fluffy bottoms are too darn cute and they don’t need to be covered up. Less regular laundry to do! ha ha

I’ve been told(lovingly) that I’m a totally hippy, but I don’t mind wearing leather and I like to glam up sometimes. I don’t eat meat…well I do now but I didn’t for a long time and am cutting it back out.

I really like this post. I think so much is relative, too. I am so much more crunchy than my other mommy friends in my current city, but I used to live in a place where I was so un-crunchy in comparison. Just trying to do my best…

I’d say I’m mostly crunchy, compared to most of my friends and family… But a lot less than a lot of people in Portland where I live! A lot of it has to do with money – I’d be a lot crunchier if I could afford all organic food and the materials needed to start up my own huge garden. I have to admit, I judge hard when people I would consider crunchy in other areas don’t cloth diaper!

Thanks for this article. I often feel that a lot of the cloth diapering blogs or websites also assume you are crunchy if you cloth diaper! I too feel like I am far from looking “crunchy”. I breastfeed, babywear, recycle, and make my own babyfood amoung other things. It is nice to know that there are other people out there who cloth diaper but don’t feel the need to fit into the “norm.” Thank you:-)

This is awesome! I just started cloth diapering, and happen to have also extended breast fed both my boys, co-slept with them, and occasionally baby wear. But I am not “Green” at all. Glad to know that it doesn’t have to be an all or one kind of thing!

I identify as a crunchy parent but not as a crunchy woman, like you I don’t always eat organic, eat meat, overindulge in technology, etc. But when it comes to parenting I’ve got a checkmark on the most common crunchy traits (breastfeeding, cloth diapering, babywearing, cosleeping, etc)

I have to say I am somewhere in the middle too. We cloth diaper, cloth wipes, as much organic food as we can. We will soon be composting and we live on enough property that we do definitely grow as much of our own food as we can. I love my Moby Wrap and so does my son. At the same time tho, there are things I find myself looking at that other things that could be done…cloth napkins, recycling, less technology and so on, and think that I am not as green as other people! I am doing what I feel is good for our family and at the same time the enviroment and I am happy with that!
