I’ll be honest, when I found out I was expecting baby #3, I was pretty excited to get to use
newborn cloth diapers! My son was 4 months old before we switched to cloth and while I’d won some newborn fluff in giveaways, I had never gotten to use any!
I started picking diapers up here and there as I could, and even found a way to do newborn cloth diaper reviews without a baby!
By the time my son was born, I thought I knew which diapers I’d like, but I was actually wrong. The GroVia newborn AIO turned out to be one of my favorites for the fit, absorbency, ease of use (and cute-ness), despite the fact that I typically prefer pocket diapers and stay-dry inners.
This baby surprised us by being born at under 7 pounds, so there were very few newborn diapers that would stay below his umbilical cord. I’ve heard some people say to just put the diaper over the cord, but that prevented his cord stump from drying out, even when we changed very often and use diapers with stay-dry inners.
He also surprised me a bit in that he tends to soak a diaper very quickly! I have never cared much for prefolds or fitteds and covers (because they’re not as easy for DH & I as pockets!) but they really do the trick to absorb like crazy & also contain messes.
I love the fact that when I change 20 diapers in a day, I don’t have to think about how much each diaper cost me! I’m excited to pass along my newborn stash to my friend, who is expecting twins in May!
Was anyone else excited about newborn diapers when they found out they were expecting?

I started using cloth when my second child was a few months old. When we found out we were expecting #3 I knew we would use cloth, and I started buying different newborn diapers. My third little one also surprised us by being much smaller than my older two. He also has really skinny legs so right now (a month old) we can only use a few of our newborn diapers on him! He can wear the lil joeys and thirsties, but our fuzzibunz and bum genius newborns are still too big for him. He’s growing fast though…so soon I’ll be able to use them all! I had forgotten just how expensive disposables were, but we don’t have enough to do full time cloth since he is still too small for some of them!
I’m totally surprised that GroVia NB AIO’s are you fave. They were my least fave.
I ended up not liking them as much after the cord fell off. It seems most newborn diapers wither don’t fit him well or aren’t absorbent enough for him once he stopped dirtying diapers every 20 minutes, LOL.
YAY!! It’s exciting that you now have a newborn to test the diapers out, instead of a teddy bear. When I was pregnant, I knew I wanted to cloth diaper, so I bought some newborn diapers, but she was almost 10 lbs., and the diapers we had were a tighter fit. I decided to keep her in disposables until her cord stump dried out and fell off. About five months after she was born, we FINALLY made the switch. Looking back, I don’t know why we didn’t make it sooner.
I was in the same situation…didn’t start with cloth until my second was 6 months old. With my third I rented newborn diapers and loved having 25 diapers that I only paid 10 dollars a week to use. It gave me the ability to try many different kinds of diapers and know which ones to invest in when it was time to get bigger diapers. Since my babies grow SO fast I only needed newborn for 4 weeks but like you said, it’s still 20 diapers a day and it felt great to know I wasn’t paying for each diaper.
If I had it to do over again, I would rent!
I think it is interesting in the comments that you say to rent for newborns. I’m expecting my 3rd baby in July and it will be my first one to start off in cloth. My other two were in sposies for the first few weeks/months.
Im starting out with prefolds I was kinda worried they wouldnt be as good as a AIO or Pocket, so im glad to hear they do work well.
My first is due in March, so I am definitely excited to try out a bunch of different types of newborn cloth diapers.
I have recently started using cloth on my 9 month old. He’s my third chid! We are currently trying for a fourth and I cannot wait to buy some newborn cloth diapers!!
