If you fold a cloth diaper correctly you really shouldn't ever have blow-outs. Especially when my babies are young I like to use a prefold and then a cover with a double gusset so that poop has to get through 3 layers of protection before it gets near their clothes. As a result I have almost never had to deal with poop on clothes, just on diapers. Many of my friends who use disposables have stories about blowouts that were bad enough that entire outfits were thrown away and carseats/strollers/high chairs required extensive washing. When the poop is on a cloth diaper you just dump everything in the pail and let the washing machine do your rinsing and cleaning. When it is on their clothes (or worse, something that isn't machine washable) you have to sit there and scrub it all out. It doesn't work that way all the time, but I've seen it often enough that I'll stick with cloth :)

I agree. If you have kids you are going to touch and clean up some gross stuff whether you cloth diaper or not. I once cupped my hands in front of my son who was gagging and caught what he threw up. It happens so what's the big deal about cloth diapering too. It's better for baby, the environment and your wallet!

I seriously do not touch any more "icky" stuff with cloth diapers than all of the blow outs I had to deal with using disposable diapers on my daughter her first two months of life. If you are a mom, you're going to get your hands dirty no matter what!

Along the lines of what Justice said "If there's a will there's a way" and you find a way that works for you.

Thank you for this article. I hear so many people saying they think cloth diapers are too gross. I am not a full-blown germophobe but I'm pretty close. If anything, I find disposables are disgusting!

I've heard you really deal with poop (and poop smell) less if you CD--how can that be true? I am going to CD, despite not wanting to handle waste, because of the thought of millions of non-degradable, "gift-wrapped" poo diapers stuck in landfills for ever disgusts me (plus saving money, and less chemicals on baby) but I was wondering if that first statement were true...

My mother keeps saying I'm going to change my mind about trying cloth diapering because it'll be too much work rather than too "icky". I have friends who say it'd be "too gross" to cloth diaper, yet they own cats and have to clean out stinky litter all the time!

Like you said, my first thought was that a TRUE germaphobe wouldn't probably have anything to do with having a baby to begin with. My mom went out to dinner with a "germaphobe" once. To a buffet. The grossest, germiest place that you can eat. People are constatly touching the serving spoons, eating, and returning...no hand washing, gross things in between....anyway, she called her out. There is a huge difference between being a little OCD about cleanliness and being a TRUE germaphobe. Someone with OCD germ-related tendencies will eventually find a routine that works for them and be able to do just about anything...because the things we learn to do the best, as a person with OCD, is adapt.
