A Lesson in Line Drying

A Lesson in Line Drying

Should you line dry your diapers?  Does it really make THAT big of a difference? In the 2nd Annual Cloth Diaper Pulse Survey by DiaperShops.com it was found that about half of cloth diapering parents line dry their diapers while the other half fluff them in the dryer.  Most manufacturers recommend either line drying or fluffing on a low/medium heat.  If you are using cloth diapers to save your family money or to be more eco-friendly you may want to consider line drying your diapers more often. Line drying can extend the life of your diapers.  Heat can have a huge impact on both the PUL and elastic that are common in cloth diapers. Line drying in the sun (direct or indirect) can naturally bleach and deodorize your diapers.  Lay them in the sun while wet and stains and odors will magically disappear. Line drying can be done indoors or out.  Any natural light will work, it doesn’t have to be a direct sunlight outdoors.  Some families have even been known to air dry their diapers in the front window of their car in the winter. Think outside the clothes line.  Some home owners … Continue reading

5 Earth Day Activities for Kids

5 Earth Day Activities for Kids

Earth Day is April 22nd every year and it’s a great time to reinforce why we must all be good environmental stewards with our children.  Take a few minutes this month and explain to your children why you recycle, use cloth diapers, or bring your own cup with you to the park.  Here are a few fun activities you can do with your kids to celebrate Earth Day. 5 Earth Day Activities for Kids Start an edible garden either in your backyard or in a container on the back porch.  Some fun vegetables to grow with kids are cherry tomatoes, scallions, herbs, lettuce, and carrots. 5 Activities You Can Teach Your Toddlers Using Cloth Diapers

5 Activities You Can Teach Your Toddlers Using Cloth Diapers

The great thing about using cloth diapers is there are so many teachable moments with your kids.  My oldest (almost 9) is very aware of the environmental benefits of using cloth diapers.  He listens to me more than I’m aware because he can answer some of the questions my husbands asks me about laundry.  I often wonder what my toddler will remember about her cloth diapering days when she gets older.  What lessons will she learn from our cloth diapering days? 5 Activities You Can Teach Your Toddlers Using Cloth Diapers: Colors – you can use the different colors in cloth diapers to teach your toddler their colors.  Once they start talking you can ask them what color diaper they want to wear.  You can teach them how to match colors by asking them to match their shirt color with the same color diaper.  When they get really good you can ask them to “go get the green diaper.” Counting – on laundry day you can have your toddler help by letting them count the diapers in the laundry basket.  Start small and teach them their numbers 1-5 and work … Continue reading
